Aqua3 Charitable Future

Exploring a long-term future for Aqua3 that could make durable all-weather mapping more accessible to education, youth groups and mountain rescue.

Current Status

Aqua3 continues to trade and fulfil orders as normal.

After more than 36 years supporting outdoor learning, schools, youth organisations and other outdoor users, I am exploring the possible transition of Aqua3 / Hope Digital into a charitable structure.

This is a long-term project. A charity has not yet been formally established, and the existing Aqua3 business continues to operate during this development stage.

What Is Being Explored?

The aim is to investigate whether Aqua3's specialist mapping experience and production facilities could eventually be used to provide durable all-weather mapping resources free of charge, or with charitable support, to organisations where cost can be a barrier to safe and effective outdoor learning.

  • Schools and colleges involved in outdoor education
  • Duke of Edinburgh's Award and expedition groups
  • Youth and community organisations
  • Mountain rescue and other appropriate voluntary outdoor organisations
  • Projects that improve navigation confidence and understanding of the countryside

Why Consider a Charitable Future?

Aqua3 maps are specialist, high-labour products. Each map is individually prepared, printed and calibrated, trimmed, hand-fed through the laminator, trimmed again and folded by hand.

That process creates a durable working map designed to survive repeated outdoor use. For schools and youth organisations, a map that can be reused year after year can provide much better long-term value than repeatedly replacing damaged paper mapping.

The longer-term question is whether this specialist capability can be preserved and used for public benefit rather than simply disappearing as traditional bespoke printed mapping becomes less widely available.

What Happens to Aqua3 During This Process?

Nothing changes for existing customers at present. Aqua3 continues to manufacture and supply maps, accept orders and support schools, groups and individual customers in the normal way.

The charitable project is being developed separately from day-to-day commercial operations.

Governance and Next Steps

The next stage is to establish an appropriate governance and advisory framework and to identify people who may be able to contribute experience in areas such as education, outdoor learning, charity governance, safeguarding, finance, fundraising and organisational development.

During this early development stage, discussions are focused on the proposed charitable aims, governance and team formation. Operational and commercially sensitive details of the existing business will remain separate until an appropriate formal structure and safeguards are in place.
